Our House Print

First Christmas in a new home

The first Christmas in a new place often arrives before anything is on the walls. The gift here is a picture of the house itself, made from one photo: kept as it is or illustrated, then printed to order.

A living room just moved into at Christmas: bare walls, stacked moving boxes and a small lit fir tree.

A picture of the house, not a bauble

We don't sell baubles or ornaments, and we don't make cards. What we do make is a picture of the front door, the bay window or the terrace they've moved into, which can only belong to one address. A "new home" decoration can hang in any house. Nothing here is printed with a name, a year or a message, so the words go in your own card, and what to write in a new home card has examples, including a first Christmas section.

What gift brings good luck to a new home?

No gift is documented in Britain as the one for a new home, and we won't invent one. Two customs do have a source. The National Coal Mining Museum describes first-footing as "the old Scottish or Northern English tradition of welcoming in the New Year", where the first person over the threshold was expected to bring "a silver coin; shortbread or a black bun; salt; a lump of coal and a drink", promising good luck and good health to the household. That's a New Year custom, not a moving-in one. Bread and salt is closer to a welcome custom; bread and salt sets out the one source we found and its limits. Our pages on housewarming traditions and bread and salt go through what we could and couldn't verify. The first-footing source was read on 1 October 2026. A print of the house isn't a luck charm, and we don't claim it is.

What to give for a first Christmas in a new home

Ask first. A practical present they've asked for, help with unpacking or a meal together can suit a move better than something decorative, and some households would rather have no presents. If they'd enjoy a picture of the home, that's where we come in, and new home gifts sets out how to choose.

Our first Christmas in our new home

The household can be the person it's for. A print of your own front door, from a photo you took, gives a first Christmas somewhere to point back to. It's a gift for the two of you, or a gift to the family who helped you move.

Keep the photo, or illustrate it

A terraced house on a grey day with a wheelie bin and a parked van outside.
A bin, a van or a grey sky in the photo is a reason to illustrate it.

Print the photo as it is when it's already a good daylight shot of the frontage. Illustrate it in one of eight styles when the photo has a bin, a van or a grey sky in it that you'd rather lose. The illustration is AI-made: verify your email and you get up to three successful watermarked previews per client per day, shown one by one, and you pick the one to keep. Check the windows, door and roofline against the photo before you choose, because AI can change them.

Use a photo you took or have permission to use. A listing photo from the estate agent is someone else's photograph, so it needs their permission like any other.

What it can be printed on

  • Poster from A4 to 70x100 cm.
  • Framed print at A3 or A2, in black or natural wood.
  • Canvas from 30x40 to 60x80 cm, or a framed canvas up to 50x70 cm in black, dark wood or natural wood.

  • An 11oz mug or a 500ml bottle, for a house with no spare wall yet.
  • A digital download of the complete artwork, for printing or framing later.

How long it takes

Everything is made after you order, so December needs a margin.

Everything is made after the order is placed. Standard UK delivery typically arrives in 4 to 9 working days, and priority delivery, chosen at checkout, brings that to 3 to 6. Weekends and bank holidays don't count. An illustrated house takes longer end to end, because you choose and approve the preview before the order goes in. We deliver to UK addresses only.

All the guides are together on the gift guides page, and ready-made houses are in the shop. Read new home gifts for choosing around the household, first home gifts if it's their first place, or housewarming gifts for the party itself.

A few practical answers

What gift brings good luck to a new home?
No gift is documented in Britain as the one for a new home. The National Coal Mining Museum describes first-footing, a New Year custom where the first person in brings a silver coin, salt, coal, shortbread or a black bun and a drink. Bread and salt is a welcome custom, covered on our bread and salt page. The source is above, and a print of the house isn't a luck charm.
What should I give for a first Christmas in a new home?
Something they've asked for or can use straight away, or a print of the house made from a photo, if they'd enjoy that. Ask what they'd welcome first.
Do you make Christmas ornaments or baubles?
No. Everything here is a picture of the house on a poster, framed print, canvas, metal, wood, mug, bottle or digital download.
Can you add "our first Christmas" or the year?
No. There is no text field on these products, and nothing is added to the artwork. Write the message in your own card.
How long will it take to arrive?
Standard UK delivery is typically 4 to 9 working days from the order and priority 3 to 6, not counting weekends and bank holidays. An illustrated house takes longer end to end, because you choose the preview first.
